HELLER internal milling of crankshafts:

  • Cutting speed is generated by the tool.
  • Feed rate is generated by the workpiece rotation.
  • Internal cutters are used for the inner diameter.
  • The workpiece is surrounded by the tool; the inner tool diameter exceeds the max. workpiece swing diameter and the chuck diameter.
  • The tool profile is designed according to the profile to be milled.
  • Two interpolating NC-axes are used for the machining of pins, positioned eccentrically to the workpiece centre and/or concentric crankshaft mains.
  • Rotary feed is generated by the workpiece rotary axis and the milling unit(s) follow as required by means of one/two linear axis/axes.
  • The plunge cut to the journal diameter is carried out by the linear axis of the milling unit with stationary rotary axis or with a spiral movement using interpolation of the two axes. During the plunge, the web faces can be completely or partially machined.
  • In order to withstand cutting forces, the workpieces are clamped and supported by two hydraulic clamping chucks with electrically synchronized rotation and by an additional steady rest which can be positioned via NC programming. This steady rest is set on a guideway below the milling slides and is always positioned between the two milling units on twin-spindle machines.
  • Machining with one or two milling units possible.
  • Machining of bearings and undercuts in one operation is feasible.
  • Simultaneous machining of mains and pin profiles possible.
  • Use of gang milling cutters is possible.
  • Accurate machining of surfaces makes rough (“green”) grinding obsolete.
